The adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and secrete hormones that help regulate your metabolism, blood pressure, and other essential function in your body. They are responsible for managing the bodies stress levels.
Most of us have heard about the bodies natural defense process called ‘fight or flight.’
If our mind perceives an imminent “attack,” our sympathetic nervous system kicks into fight or flight mode. This triggers an Adrenaline release.
Adrenaline, along with norepinephrine, is largely responsible for the immediate reactions we feel when stressed – increased heart rate, a surge of energy which you might need to run away from a dangerous situation, and increased focus.
Your adrenal glands also simultaneously release Cortisol. In survival mode, the optimal amounts of cortisol can be life saving.
But when you develop a chronic stress program, the body continuously releases cortisol, and chronic elevated levels can lead to serious issues. Too much cortisol can suppress the immune system, increase blood pressure and sugar, decrease libido, produce acne, contribute to obesity and more.
Throughout human history, ‘fight or flight’ responses might occur once every month or so (run, there’s a tiger!). Now, with the increased stress of busy schedules, demands of society, and lack of boundaries, the fight-or-flight response is triggered multiple times DAILY.
This leads to chronic adrenal fatigue. You can get moody, tired, anxious, and more stressed out with each passing day.
The Stages of Chronic Adrenal Fatigue
Over-activation of the adrenals; it happens during or immediately after stress and can be either physical or mental. Cortisol is typically elevated during this time with DHEA (hormone) levels being normal.
Normal patterns of the stress hormone cortisol, yet the overall levels are low and DHEA is depleted. Fatigue sets in, joint pain can be present, menstrual cycles become irregular, the ‘cortisol roll’ around your belly starts, your mood drops, and sleep becomes less restorative.
Persistent, around-the-clock fatigue and irritability. It is also VERY common to experience Chronic Adrenal Fatigue with PTSD.
